In most cases the ankle starts to swell immediately and may occur bruising. The nerves are more sensitive and the pain can worsen when the sore area is pressed or the foot moves in certain directions.
One fast changing movement with your foot is enough for the ligaments on the outside of the ankle to stretch and tear. In these cases the ankle rolls outward and the foot turns inward.
